MetaTrader5 Depth of Market: why the order book on forex pairs is an illusion for the trader

A trader opens a symbol window, sees the Depth of Market item, turns it on - and runs into an empty table. No orders, no volumes, just silence. A logical question arises: is the platform broken, or is the broker hiding something?

The answer is simpler and harsher: MetaTrader5's depth of market physically cannot work on most instruments that a retail trader trades. Below is why it's set up this way, where this feature actually works, and how not to waste time setting up something that won't produce results.

What is Depth of Market in MetaTrader5 and how to enable it

Depth of Market (DOM) is a table of limit orders to buy and sell with volume indicated at each price level. The market order book in MetaTrader5 is technically implemented as a separate window, called up from the instrument's context menu.

How to enable:
  1. Open the Market Watch window.
  2. Right-click on the desired symbol.
  3. Select "Depth of Market" or press Alt+B after highlighting the instrument.
  4. A separate window will open with two columns - Bid and Ask, and volumes by level.

It is at this step that most traders working with EURUSD or GBPUSD see the window open - but the table remains empty. This is not a bug: a screenshot of such an empty table is worth saving and attaching to a support ticket to the broker if questions arise - that way support staff immediately see that there is no data for the instrument, rather than the interface not working correctly.

Practical example: if you open DOM on a futures contract, e.g. 6E (EUR/USD CME), with an active bridge, the trader will see 5-10 price levels with a step of 0.0001 and volume from 20 to 400 contracts per level. At the same time on EURUSD the window will remain empty under identical market conditions.

Why the market order book in MetaTrader5 does not work for forex pairs

Forex is an over-the-counter (OTC) market. There is no single order book here because there is no single exchange that maintains it.

⚠ IMPORTANT An order book requires a centralised order book. A forex broker forms the EURUSD quote by aggregating prices from several liquidity providers or even synthetically based on a single feed - a single public order book physically does not exist. This applies not only to currency pairs but also to CFDs on gold, silver, indices: all of them are derivative instruments without an exchange order book.
List of instruments where DOM in MetaTrader5 will not provide data in the vast majority of cases:
  • Currency pairs (EURUSD, GBPUSD, USDJPY and others);
  • CFDs on metals (gold, silver, platinum);
  • CFDs on indices (S&P 500, DAX, FTSE);
  • CFDs on cryptocurrencies with most brokers.

ℹ INFO The DOM function in MetaTrader5 is not useless as such - the platform was originally designed with exchange infrastructure support. This opens up the possibility of working with a real order book where the broker is genuinely connected to the exchange via a FIX bridge - for example, on the derivatives market of the Moscow Exchange or on CME futures with the appropriate access.

"The depth of market is only as useful as the market it displays is transparent" - a principle that market makers follow when choosing a venue for execution.

Comment: in the context of MetaTrader5, this means that the presence of a Depth of Market menu item says nothing about the actual availability of data. The function is part of the terminal, not a broker guarantee. What needs to be checked is not the interface but the specific bridge to a specific exchange.

When MetaTrader5 depth of market is still useful - futures and exchange-traded instruments

MetaTrader5 allows the broker to technically implement an order book for exchange-traded derivatives - but whether they actually implement it in practice is up to the broker.

The difference is fundamental: platform capability ≠ broker obligation. Even if MetaTrader5 supports displaying the order book for Euro futures (EUR futures, CME), a particular broker may not build a bridge to that liquidity, instead limiting themselves to a synthetic CFD on the same underlying.

Practical example: a trader compares two brokers on the instrument "Gold futures". Broker A displays 8 levels with a step of $0.10 and a total volume of 1200 lots at the first three levels in DOM - a real exchange bridge is connected. Broker B has the same ticker labelled "Gold Futures CFD", the DOM window is empty - this is a synthetic instrument without an exchange order book, despite the similar name.

List of signs that an instrument is genuinely exchange-traded and DOM will work:
  • The symbol specification indicates a specific execution exchange (not "in-house execution");
  • The spread is floating and changes in real time along with the order book;
  • The broker explicitly states they have a FIX bridge or direct market access (DMA).

FAQ

+ 1. Why is the market order book in MetaTrader5 always empty on EURUSD?
Because forex is an over-the-counter market without a single public order book. The DOM function technically exists in the terminal, but the data for it comes from an exchange, which forex pairs do not have.
+ 2. Can I enable MetaTrader5 depth of market for gold or silver?
No, if it is a CFD instrument. Metals are traded by most brokers as contracts for difference, not as exchange-traded futures, so there will be no order book for them - the window will remain empty regardless of settings.
+ 3. How can I check whether DOM works with my broker before opening an account?
Open a demo account, enable Depth of Market via the context menu on the instrument of interest and see whether price levels with volumes appear. An empty table during a trading session is a sign that there is no exchange bridge.
